Whenever I was really sad about something that was simply out of my control, my mom's advice was simply, 'this too shall pass'. And so it is with a heavy heart that I write to let you all know how much your comments meant to me even though I read them through tears of sorrow at letting her go.
Vera J. Howe died on September 4 at 2:25 AM in the middle of a massive thunderstorm. Funny thing is, I had bought her a few cds of nature sounds and her absolute favorite one was the 'rain and thunder' cd! So I know she loved going out in a bang like that. She died peacefully and me, my brothers and my niece (who is like my sister) were all around her. It was like she just sorta took her last breath. She hadn't shown any consciousness for about a week yet it was still surreal when she stopped breathing. sigh.
I've never seen anyone die before and it's not something I recommend. But I'm glad I was there for her and somehow for me, too.
The services were rough to get through but we did it. My niece, Kat and I wrote a big long personal history about my mom and we braved actually reading it out loud at the funeral service. Whew. That was the hardest public speaking I've ever done.
I'm back in LA now and have been very melancholy and slow. Everything feels like molasses. But I am knitting frantically for the book. The photo shoot is in a week so I have to be ready. Bam has been unbelievably amazing and soooooooooooooo alive and 'there'.
Again, I must thank the community of knitting bloggers out there. I have felt your cyber support and read all of your comments several times. It helped immensely to know you were all there.
In honor of how much many of you have shared with me....this is totally off knitting but here are a few photos to share my mom's love of life, music and games...........
Mom on the upright bass (see, I got it all from her!)....that's me on the bottom right of the pic sitting next to my cousin, Pam. The rest of the band are my mom's brother, sister and dad. (she had six brothers and sisters........all of them musical!)
Fast forward to my dad, mom, me and Bam.
My mom and dad, over 50 years of happy marriage.
Vera J. Howe.
